Oscars Death Race 2020: Comics and Cartoons

Week two, and it is time to get all the Disney crap out of the way. Thankfully, there were a lot really good movies among the trash. And a few surprises for a pessimist as me.

Klaus (2019)
What a nice surprise. Except for a weak ending, this is thoroughly entertaining, sweet and funny.
Nominated for Best Animated Feature Film in 2020.

I Lost My Body (2019)
Great mood, and surreal, but not off-putting. Nice.
Nominated for Best Animated Feature Film in 2020.

Missing Link (2019)
A weaker Laika produced movie is still better than most other animated movies.
It would be funnier if it didn’t try so hard to be funny.
Nominated for Best Animated Feature Film in 2020.

Daughter (2019)
Exhausting, and not in a good way. Some moments grabbed me, but never could get a hold on me for long.
Nominated for Best Animated Short Film in 2020.

Hair Love (2019)
Cute, but very streamlined.
Nominated for Best Animated Short Film in 2020.

Kitbull (2019)
Also cute, but managed to tell it’s story better.
Nominated for Best Animated Short Film in 2020.

Memorable (2019)
Surreal and haunting. Kind of great.
Nominated for Best Animated Short Film in 2020.

Sister (2018)
Didn’t quite work for me, although it is creative. The message felt very tacked on.
Nominated for Best Animated Short Film in 2020.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019)
The only good thing I can say about this movie is that the rest of the movie is not as obnoxious as the first 10 or so minutes.
Nominated for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling in 2020.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
A hot mess. It feels like they wrote down the scenario from two kids playing with their action figures, and made it into a movie, just without the charm.
Nominated for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Score), Best Achievement in Visual Effects, Best Achievement in Sound Editing in 2020.

Joker (2019)
I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I am so, so tired of comic book movies, but unlike the others that feels like a product, this at least feels like a movie. That being said, the reason it works is because of Phoenix.
Nominated for Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Achievement in Directing, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Joaquin Phoenix), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Achievement in Cinematography, Best Achievement in Costume Design, Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Score), Best Achievement in Film Editing, Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, Best Achievement in Sound Editing in 2020.

The Lion King (2019)
An totally unnecessary cash grab. But it worked, I guess, as it scooped in all the money.
People are stupid.
Nominated for Best Achievement in Visual Effects in 2020.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019)
It’s fine. Nothing to write home about.
Nominated for Best Animated Feature Film in 2020.

Frozen II (2019)
Not as bad as I anticipated. I actually think I liked this one better than the first one.
Nominated for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song) For song “Into the Unknown” in 2020.

Toy Story 4 (2019)
A film I had no interest in watching as I thought the trilogy wrapped things up nicely.
I am really glad I was proven wrong. I really, really liked it, and it is perfect as an epilogue to the former three movies. I enjoyed the themes, it made me laugh and it made me tear up.
Nominated for Best Animated Feature Film, Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song) For song “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” in 2020.
