Short Week

I am going on a trip to a 70mm festival in Oslo, so I just had a couple of days this week to watch movies, so I decided to watch the 2011 nominated shorts, but I didn’t even managed that, so I still have a few left to watch on another occasion.

Let’s Pollute (2009)
An old-timey styled cartoon satire about polluting. Short and entertaining without leaving much of an impact. Not everything has to, though.
Nominated for Best Short Film, Animated in 2011.

Madagascar, a Journey Diary (2010)
Of the nominated, this is by far my favorite. It has a cool style and lot’s of energy, and tells a lot during its few minutes.
Nominated for Best Short Film, Animated in 2011.

The Gruffalo (2009)
Not much to it. Very much a short for kids and kids alone.
Nominated for Best Short Film, Animated in 2011.

The Lost Thing (2010)
I don’t quite get why this should win. The look feels very familiar, although I am hard pressed to figure out why. It got bland, even though it feels ernest.
Winner of Best Short Film, Animated in 2011.

The Crush (2010)
The kid is such a bad actor it gets really adorable and becomes a strength for the film.
Nominated for Best Short Film, Live Action in 2011.

God of Love (2010)
Very potently made, and sweet and funny. A very safe winner, without undermining it too much.
Winner of Best Short Film, Live Action in 2011.

Killing in the Name (2010)
War documentaries are always hard to watch, this is no exception, but it lost its flow and focus a tad towards the end.
Nominated for Best Documentary, Short Subjects in 2011.

Poster Girl (2010)
A close up look at a person falling apart because of PTSD. Somehow it feels like this documentary helps in being a bit of therapy for her. Heartbreaking, but manages to have a hopeful outlook.
Nominated for Best Documentary, Short Subjects in 2011.
